I Shall Wear Purple
for voice, piano and English horn (or saxophone)
by Sally Reid, composer, ASCAP
Program notes:
I Shall Wear Purple is based on Jenny Joseph's sassy
text "Warning." If old age brings privileges, surely
the freedom to wear what one pleases and to learn to spit should
be included. This musical setting substitutes unfettered glee
(in the guise of improvised "sprechstimme" passages
and asymmetric meters) for conventional sobriety and decorum.

Selected Performance History:
- March 2001, Performance of I Shall Wear Purple during
the Sixth International Festival of Women Composers and Indiana
University of Pennsylvania.

(audio taken from video of performance
- tape entrance is late)
soprano - Judith A. Coe; English horn - Sally Reid;
piano - Kay Williams
- April 2000, work in progress improvisation of I Shall
Wear Purple at Abilene Christian University.
