Dr. Alison James, a female surgeon in Syracuse, NY in1910, battles bureaucracy, male prejudice, death and suffering in a personal struggle to find meaning and purpose. Through failure she learns that her opponent is not Death (who always triumphs) or male prejudice (which afflicts every profession), but suffering.
