Five Haiku
for mezzo-soprano and piano (1973)

Program Notes:
The haiku is a Japanese poetic form composed of seventeen syllables.
Four of the haiku here are by American poets Anne Rutherford ("The
Old Clock;" "Drifting into Sleep;" The Pearl of
Great Price") and Hilda Aarons ("Voices of the Young").
The fifth ("A Dewdrop") is by the Japanese poet Issa.
This composition was selected for an award by the Texas Music
Educators' Association in 1974 and was performed at their convention
that year. (Ann Harrell performance appears in
audio below.)

- October 2, 1986 - Performance of Five Haiku by
Ann Harrell during a Recital of Original Works by Sally Reid
at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX.
- February 1974 - Performance of Five Haiku as composition
finalist at the Texas Music Educator's Association conferene,
Houston, TX.
