Fiuggi Fanfare

for concert band

by Sally Reid, composer, ASCAP

duration: 5 minutes

commissioned by the city of Fiuggi, Italy and Fondazione Adkins Chiti, 1997

Program Notes:

Fiuggi Fanfare was commissioned by the city of Fiuggi, Italy and Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica expressly for the Gli Incontri al Borgo symposium in Fiuggi in September 1997. It is a transcription for concert band of Fiuggi Fanfare (1996) for five saxophones which received its premiére performance during the First Fiuggi Festival (1996) by the Donne in Sax quartet and Franco-American saxophonist Paul Wehage.

The concert band version adds percussion and brass in support of the versatility and vivacity of the saxophones' swirls and whirls of bright, festive notes contrasting with the heralding fanfare passages. The recurring lyrical gestures are supported by an insistent rhythmic accompaniment and sudden dynamic contrasts. The ensemble sets the spritely festive tone for the festival activities to follow.

* The Fiuggi Fanfare is also available in a version for saxophone quartet.
