From Whence Butterflies?
a fantasy for piano and electronics
duration: 8 minutes; published by Elm Creek Music
commissioned by Jerome Reed, 1987
Additional research support received from
the Abilene Christian University
Research Council.
Program Notes:
From Whence Butterflies? is a fantasy for piano and tape and one of a
series of six similar works. The composition's title is taken
by permission from a haiku by Joy Shieman of Los Altos, California.
It is also one of five Shieman haiku set by Reid in a song cycle
entitled Tear
on a Child's Cheek.
The entire seventeen syllable text is:
From whence butterflies?
Thirteen years descends the stairs
in long yellow gown.
The realization employs Yamaha TX series
synthesis modules.
